Sunday Cinema Series

We are running Sunday Cinema, a series of video entertainments to be held one Sunday each month at the Museum. To make it an authentic old-time movie experience, we have purchased a popcorn popper and cart. Come and join us for movies and popcorn!  The first Sunday Cinema of the 2013 year will be April 14 at 2pm.  There will be 2 short movies which are Legacy of Mountain men and Frontier Experience: One Woman's Experience Based On a Diary.  Hope you can join us!

The Museum will be opening the Spring Valley Historical site once a month on the following dates:

June 15 10-1

July 20 10-1

August 17 10-1

September 21 10-1 (subject to change due to weather conditions)

October 19 10-1(subject to change due to weather conditions)
On these dates the museum itself will be closed and our volunteers will be out at this site to show you around and answer your questions.  Hope you stop on by and see all we have to offer there on those dates.  The links to the left for School and  Wetzel cabin will give you an idea on a couple of the things the site has to offer.

Volunteers Needed!

Do you like to bake? You can help the Geary County Historical Society with our efforts to make up for lost public funds and offer exciting new programs to the community right in your own home. We need home-made items such as cookies, pies and cakes for events like the Ice Cream Social, and educational programs at the Museum throughout the year. If you can help, contact the Museum at 238-1666. We will check with you when a fund raiser or program is coming up.

Help preserve of St. Joseph’s!  Updated

GCHS is working to restore St. Joseph’s Church on McDowell Creek Road to usable condition. The building has been placed on the State Register of Historic Places.

The roof work has been completed on St. Joseph's by John Poole!

Eric Stahl also hopes to persuade a local gentleman, who has experience patching a wooden floor and making temporary Plexiglas windows for a church, to volunteer for the St. Joseph’s restoration. The Society and the McDowell community would have to help with labor and supplies. If we could get the roof fixed, the floor patched and refinished, and Plexiglas in the window openings, we could have the Church open this year for a centennial celebration.

Many people have donated toward this project already, but we have a long way to go! After the roof, the floors and interior will need extensive work. Then will come the windows, heating and air conditioning, and plumbing. Contributions of any amount are appreciated. Send them to Geary County Historical Society, P.O. Box 1161, Junction City, KS 66441, and be sure to designate the St. Joseph’s Fund.
